This readme file describes the variables in the two data files (Jill.data.withzeros.csv, Jill.data.csv) that were the basis of the above manuscript.
Jill.data contains all variables found in Jill.data.withzeros.csv, but excludes traps that did not catch any beetles (whether or not they were damaged by vertebrate scavengers). All traps were included in Jill.data.withzeros.csv with the exception of traps that were both damaged by vertebrate scavengers and also contained no beetles.

Station = ID name of trap location

round = corresponds to the first or second roung of trapping at that station

Date = date trap was collected

Julian.Date = julian date that each trap was collected

vert.location = either ground or canopy, corresponding to where the trap was set (0m or 6m)

N.sayi = number of Nicrophorus sayi collected from each trap

N.orbicollis = number of Nicrophorus orbicollis collected from each trap

N.defodiens = number of Nicrophorus defodiens collected from each trap

N.tomentosus = number of Nicrophorus tomentosus collected from each trap

N.hebes = number of Nicrophorus hebes collected from each trap

N.pustulatus = number of Nicrophorus pustulatus collected from each trap

Ncrdes.surinamensus = number of Necrodes surinamensus collected from each trap

N.americana = number of Necrophila americana collected from each trap

O.inequale = number of Oiceoptoma inaequale collected from each trap

O.noveboracense = number of Oiceoptoma noveboracense collected from each trap

numb.spp = number of different carrion beetle species found in each trap

numb.beetles = total number of carrion beetles (individuals of all species) found in each trap
